Costume & Makeup Design
At my core, I am a storyteller. My favorite way to convey stories is through character building and expressions of self through appearance. This love is what drew me to the world of costuming and makeup, giving life to art through the body on the stage.
In my work, each article of clothing has been chosen for a reason and nothing is coincidental. Either a piece is selected for its historical significance or to reflect the character itself; often both. On the face, the makeup is always lending itself to the bigger picture of the whole ensemble. It exists to compliment the story being told, not outshine it. The accuracy of such things is very important to me and an integral part of my work.
When it comes to my costumes, I love working with historical / period pieces. I am heavily inspired by (and a little obsessed with) fashion history, so being able to accurately pay tribute to the greats of our past is an honor I will never refuse. Researching the area the piece is set in, the era, and any special character attributes is something I take great joy in and that is clear in my work. I find such beauty in garments made decades and centuries ago and I relish in adapting that beauty for the stage.
In makeup, I tend to gravitate towards the strange and avant garde. I love playing with faces and changing or accentuating their shape with makeup. When it comes to the stage, I believe the right makeup can make or break a character. It’s easy to slap some fake blood on a wounded character, but a carefully curated SFX design can take the immersion to a whole new level. Even a show based in the 1940s can be elevated with the correct makeup for the time period in comparison to modern day.
My goal with my work is to create looks for characters that are so curated that you know vital information about them just from the first look. I aim to create unforgettable, cohesive, beautiful designs to expertly convey the story they were created to tell.
